I wasn’t doing any of this a few years ago….so I wasn’t doing any of this a few years ago….so where did I start?

My true passion for building and wood working began 20 year ago in grade 9 but I decided to pursue a different path because I didn’t feel “woodworking” was a female thing to do.

Fast forward to 2020 - I shut down my photography business a few years earlier and had started a family. The world became isolated and I was desperate to find ways to keep my hands and mind active. I decided to take my husband’s “honey-do-list” off this shoulders as he was an essential worker and teach myself how to make our house a home.

After a few short pointers of how to use a drill and mitre saw, I decided my very first project would be a coat hanger for our entrance. It was a simple 1x8 cedar board with 5 hooks. Although small, it gave me confidence to jump into larger projects and teach myself more advanced tools like a table saw and router.

So other than my husband, how did I learn to use tools, build entire rooms, custom cabinets, and even a custom deck? Trial and error and a lot of creative vision and figuring out how to make what I wanted. I learn by doing - not watching. I observe things constantly around me and start to break down how it’s made so I can attempt it.

3 years later, here I am - building a community of like-minded individuals and showing them that they can do what their heart and passion calls them to do. Here I am empowering others to create Homes with Heart. And if you’re new here, I can’t wait for you to join me while we start a whole new adventure building an acreage from scratch!

It’s going to be a wild journey but we aren’t It’s going to be a wild journey but we aren’t giving up! 🌾

We sold our house at the end of August in 36 hours but thankfully don’t need to be out until December 1st. As soon as we sold, we began speaking with the banks to get a large enough loan to buy a piece of land we fell in love with and build a shop to move our camper into for the winter months until we started out forever home build in the spring.

This is where things went south. We put an offer on the land and it was accepted. We went back to the bank to finalize everything with our loan and that’s when we discovered the bank was nervous about it all and decided to reduce the original loan they had said they’d give us. This forced us to search for money and pull from savings and resources to come up with the amount we needed just for the land sale so we didn’t lose it.

We now won’t be able to build the shop as quickly as we were hoping and will now be renting from end of November, hopefully only till February if there are no other delays. The goal is just to get the heated shop up so we can get the camper in and live there for the remainder of the winter months.

We did stake out our roadway onto the property as well as the home and shop location. This helps me be at ease about because even though those things aren’t happening when we planned, seeing the future to come, gets me so excited. We also decided to go with well water to save on overall expenses down the road. The city water line was too far and we had quotes that were way out of our budget. Thankfully, we only had to drill one hole and found water fairly quickly!

This isn’t ideal and it’s been stressful for our whole family but God has me in a season of trust and letting go of control so I know, even though the waves are high, they will subside.
