FALL ORC 2021 – Week 7 – A Shot In The Dark…No Wait, LIGHT!
Week 7 of the One Room Challenge and 7 days left!! How is that even possible?! I am coming down the wire and getting this pantry completed! But there is good news this week! Want to know what got done? Keep reading!
But first, if you are new here, Hey! I‘m Jenna! I am a 31 year old DIYer from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. I am a mom to 3 girls and have been married for 10 years to the love of my life, Brock. I started DIY in April 2020 when things shut down and I was stuck in my house. I started posting to my Instagram the progress of my projects as well as tips I learnt along the way. We built our house 6 years ago and kept it builder grade because it was what we could afford at the time. After saving for a few years, I felt it was time to start making our house a home, one room at a time. I have learnt to use tools and build things I never thought I could. Since, I have completed 15+ rooms and have so many more projects planned for 2022! Okay, now back to The Pantry Project.
If you’d like to catch up on the progress, head on over to the previous weeks to see what has happened to lead up to Week 7!

I was really nervous that this pantry wasn‘t going to be finished in time because of me getting sick for 2 weeks but it‘s slowly coming all together. A lot was done this week and we are about to head into hyper drive the next 7 days!
LET THERE BE LIGHT
The electricians wrapped up late last week and I couldn‘t be more happy with my lighting choices from Kichler Lighting. I took a few risks and they paid off. First, let‘s talk about the under-mount lighting. This was something I was unsure about adding but knew it would illuminate the space and create a relaxing atmosphere. We also installed the Strabo 12in 3 Light Semi Flush Mount Light in Black in the back part of the pantry and when I say I am in love, I am IN LOVE! I was worried it was going to interfere with both built-ins but it sit a perfect distance from both and doesn’t take away from either. It adds the right amount of Modern industrial and ties in with the rest of my home beautifully!
DRAWERS
We have drawers! Well, 50% of them at least! I called in my good friend Spencer, who is a finishing carpenter, to come build the drawers and drawer faces because if i am being honest, I just didn’t have to time after being sick and it’s my least favourite thing of a cabinet build (If you were here for the SPRING ORC, you know). He will be back this week to finish them up so I can get paint and stain on them!
PAINT
The Cabinets now have paint! I did decided to hand paint them and I did have a lot of questions as to why I decided to hand paint instead of spray the cabinets and simply the reason is TIME. I knew it would take me longer to tape off the room to protect the stained cabinets and shelves just for a few cabinets faces and insides so I chose to roll them. I used my Handy Pro Pail and if you don’t own one, you need one! Its ergonomic and has an adjustable handle to fit any hand as well has a magnetic strip to hold your paint brush out of the bucket. The pail I have also has a side for a small roller – a two in one deal! I went with Alabaster By Sherwin Williams for the cabinets as I feel it’s less harsh than bright white and brings in a little warmth.
TRIM and COUNTER
I was able to get the trim put on the fronts of the shelves plus on the main cabinet unit. I also did the double layer flat stock crown on the cabinets with finish them off nicely. I still have to stain the shelf fronts but I am excited to see so much progress this week! ALSO, we have counters! I am just trying to decided a finish for them but so excited because that means tiles can start!
So what is left to do? Well, a whole lot!
- Shiplap And Paint
- Remaining Drawers and Faces
- Stain Shelf Fronts
- TILE!! (we have another friend coming in to help because, again, with 7 days left, I just don’t have time on my own and its okay to ask for help)
- Recipe Book Wall (This is still up in the air! We will see how the week pans out!)
- Touchups and Finishing!
